The Humble Beginnings of Santa Clause
Christmas , Culture / August 4, 2008

It seems that children wonder about Santa Clause during Christmas. It all goes back to a legend that can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St. Nicholas. It is believed that Nicholas was born sometime around 280 A.D. in Patara, near Myra in modern-day Turkey. He is very much admired due to his kindness and humility. One of the best known of the St. Nicholas stories is that he saved three poor sisters from being sold into slavery or prostitution by their father by providing them with a dowry so that they could be married. He became well known to many people as protector of children and sailors. In our time, St. Nicholas transformed into Santa Clause, the ageless, timeless, deathless white-bearded man who gives out gifts on Christmas. He also popularly depicted on Christmas Cards and also on Humorous Christmas Cards. Bookmark and Share: Tags: Christmas, santa clause
