PSA Levels and You

I know. “What’s a good reading for a PSA test?” is not a question you wake up asking yourself. In fact you may not ever think about PSA testing. Which isn’t exactly startling news either. That despite the benefits you get from such screening. Early detection of prostate cancer for one. (You really want to find this type of cancer before you have any symptoms.)

So when the level of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood is on the rise that may signal something not normal going on in your prostate. At the least further investigation is called for once your number is elevated above 4 ng/mL. Of course this is when the naysayers like to bring up false positives and other smoke screens.

And yes you’ll have those. But that’s what biopsies are for. Yet don’t let that deter you from annual screenings. And let’s not get all squeamish about the DRE either. All this is something you need to know more about. Even if you don’t normally concern yourself with your prostate.
