With the wealth of HIV information available, it is amazing and distressing that this horrible disease continues to spread. I suppose that a lot of the reason has to do with the nature of the beast. We can have all the information on HIV which we want to, but as long as our society continues to have an unhealthy view on sexuality, it won’t do as much good as it should.
Clinics give out all sorts of HIV information, as well as info on other stds and condoms to help reduce risk of infection, but the fact is that people are neurotic about sex. Either they feel unhealthy talking about HIV information, or they are reacting against that inhibited upbringing with exaggerated promiscuity which can lead them to dive into situations which really are not safe.
The situation is even worse in parts of Africa, where there are no major government institutions to spread HIV information, and where peoples perspectives about sex in general are as backwards, or even worse, then the fundamentalist communities in the United States.
The information on acquired immune deficiency syndrome is often plain wrong and even destructive. Even if there were HIV information available to these communities, and even if people did feel free to talk about it, what could they do? Many of these villages lack the basics of sanitation, to say nothing of birth control to help prevent the spread of stds.
What is worse about it is that the amount of HIV information which one needs to help stop aids is so little. All you really need to know are a few facts about the disease. You must know how it is transmitted, and how it can be stopped, or at least made less likely, by the use of birth control, as well as the relative risks of different kinds of sexual congress.
But rather than engaging in a frank and open discussion of human sexuality, the ideologues would rather keep children, and as much of society as possible, ignorant about the disease, touting unrealistic “abstinence until marriage” ideology, instead of giving teenagers good, honest HIV information as they begin to reach the age when they will need to make their own decisions about sex and love.
Anything that leads to disease and suffering is tragic, but when people let their silly biases stop them from speaking honestly, it makes it just that much worse.
